Opening Day Photos

From The Old Dock, and Opening Day 2009 (New Dock Dedication)

Not sure when I will have time to do captions, so I'm just going to go ahead & post! I'd taken a few pictures of the old dock (plus rounded up one from the 2008 Open House) & since that was just a few pictures, I've added the opening day festivities to the gallery. Enjoy!

Trip Report: Empire Kayaks, April 17, 2009

Last Friday, April 17, 2009, Walter (Pictured top right), Walter (Pictured bottom right) and I (What? No picture?) put in at Empire Kayaks, located on the waterfront at in Island Park, NY along Nassau County’s South Shore, just west of Jones Beach.

We put in around noon. Four hours and 7.8 miles later we took out after an enjoyable paddle though open bay and marshland. Once gain I paddled the Necky Chatam 16 club boat that I had paddled before and that is currently my favorite boat. Walter and Tony paddled boats they own.

With a water temperature around 50 and air temperature around 56, all three of us wore dry suits with minimal insulation underneath. The water and wind were generally calm but the wind picked up a little near the end of our trip. Waterfowl were numerous, but not being a birder, I cannot really report what we saw.

Presbyterians call the church owned hosing clergy live in a “Manse” but I felt right at home, and not at all out of my element, when we were paddling through a channel bisecting “Parsonage Island.” Can I claim I was working at home when I was actually paddling?

Dedication of the New Dock, Sebago Canoe Club, Sunday, April 19th at Noon!

Picture taken last Saturday, shortly before launching on my last paddle off the old dock. Yes, the weather was filthy - it just served to improve the usual Gino's deliciousness!
From The Old Dock

I'd mentioned in passing the other day that the Sebago Canoe Club is getting a new dock this week!

The dedication ceremony is this Sunday, 4/19/2009, and YOU yes YOU are invited!

I'll understand if you can't make it since this being a blog and all, you might not exactly live close enough to make it to the Paerdegat Basin, but if you do live anywhere in the area & you'd like to come see the club I'm always blithering on about, the Sebago crew would love to see you there!

Full details on the Sebago Canoe Club website. Ignore the detail about rsvp'ing by April 1st - let's just say that it's sort of an accidental, retroactive April Fool's Day joke. Fooled me anyways - I'd gone to post it a couple of weeks ago, saw the RSVP note, figured I'd better check in with a board member or two before I said anything and then, er, sort of forgot to ask until today. Sorry about the short notice!

Can't make it to this one, or rather wait to visit the club until the water's a little warmer & you can try out one of our boats? Join us at our Open House on Saturday, May 30th, or at any of our Open Paddles from June 3rd on! And if you've got a hand-launchable boat of your own, don't forget that Sebago is part of the New York City Watertrail - the club grounds are open from 9 am to 5 pm on weekend days from the Open House on May 30th all the way through the summer to Labor Day, I believe it is, and there's always at least one club member who can answer most questions a person might have on duty during those hours.

Marcus Demuth returns to Sebago CC

Marcus Demuth will be at the Sebago Canoe Clubhouse to give a talk and slide show on his recent record
breaking sea kayak circumnavigation of the Falkland Islands.
I suspect he will also be talking about last years attempt to circumnavigate Iceland and possibly other expeditions as well.

Saturday April 11, 2009, 6:00PM

We are asking for a $10 donation to help show our support on his upcoming 2nd attempt to circumnavigate Iceland.
The donation is not required for attendance, any amount can be donated.

If you have any interest in outdoors adventure, you'll want to attend, he has many experiences to talk about and wonderful photos to go along.
